Overview

DaVita, in collaboration with Accenture, utilizes the metaverse for immersive, pre-patient training of dialysis technicians, potentially transforming healthcare education. This innovation is part of DaVita’s extensive clinical onboarding program, replacing traditional training methods with virtual experiences to optimize learning efficiency. This change allows trainees to gain more practice time in a virtual setting, minimizing disruptions in the physical clinical environment and enhancing the overall training experience.

Problem Statement

In order to learn the setup of the dialysis machine, trainees initially acquired skills through online videos, which proved ineffective. Transitioning to on-site training posed a significant leap, hindered by limited time. The trainees could not develop the muscle memory crucial for effective practice. This negatively affected their confidence when using the dialysis machine during patient interactions.

Strategy

  1. Auditing the current learning materials – video classes.
  2. Finding suitable video training to be translated into POC VR training.
  3. Key touchpoints identified.
  4. Touchpoints are translated and abstracted into a spatial design system.
  5. Training is broken down into individual learning steps. Each step consists of the Instruction, User action, and Evaluation steps.
